UTeM's Perodua Eco-Challenge 2011
Perodua's increasingly prominent Eco-Challenge competition has been renewed for a third installment this year, with 13 institutions selected for participation. Out of 27 private and public institutes of higher learning invited to submit proposals for this year's event, Perodua received responses from 23.
As before, participating universities have five months to prepare a car that can go the furthest distance on precisely half a litre of petrol. The difference this time, however, is that Perodua is giving only an engine and transmission rather than a whole car as they did in previous iterations. Each of the participating institutes received a unit of the 659cc EF-VE engine mated to a manual transmission.
This change in parameters has no doubt increased the overall difficulty level of the challenge, but Perodua has also resolved to help out in other ways. The development grant given to each institutes of higher learning has been raised from RM10,000 to RM17,500, and the handover period has been brought forward by a month, giving the teams that much additional time to prepare. Perodua's allocation for this programme adds up to RM1.2 million for 2011.
Currently featured in the Perodua Viva 660BX and 660EX, the three-cylinder EF-VE features 12 valves, twin camshafts, and DVVT. In the Viva, it makes 47hp @ 7,200rpm and 58Nm @ 4,400rpm. If lessons from the previous years were any indication, we expect more than a few participants to de-tune the engine way below those modest figures.
One potentially major stumbling block for the participating institutions will be the task of designing and building the car's body and framework. Although the finished product will not be pushed in a rigourous manner, there remains the need for a study framework to underpin the car. This is first and foremost a safety concern, and Perodua engineers will make their expertise available to guide the students in building a sufficiently solid chassis for the competition.
Tentatively, the race day will take place once again at the Melaka International Motorsports Circuit on 25 June 2011. Participation in this programme represents an excellent opportunity for students to hone not only their engineering skills and knowledge, but also various other soft skills such as teamwork, leadership, negotiation skills, and responsibility.
Participating institutions of higher learning for the Perodua Eco-Challenge 2011 are as follows:
- Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM)
- Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL)
- Politeknik Sultan Azlan Shah (PSAS)
- Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP)
- Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM)
- Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM)
- Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP)
- Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN)
- Universiti Industri Selangor (UNISEL)
- Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO)
- Politeknik Port Dickson (POLIPD)
- Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM)
- Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM)
This year, UTeM are participate in this event with a team named UTeM Eco-Tech and will compete against other institutions of higher learning. Go UTeM, best of luck!

Made in Gaza: Formula 1-style car
In the world of motorsport, it is usually all about big engines and big money.
But a group of students from United Nations Relief and Works Agency's (UNRWA) Khan Younis Training Center (KYTC) in Gaza has created a Formula 1-style racing car from scratch, out of recycled parts.
Because of the Israeli blockade on Gaza, most of the parts for the car had to be manufactured at the centre's workshop.
Proof that a little improvisation can go a long way - they have been invited to compete at this year's prestigious Formula Student competition, organised by the Institution for Mechanical Engineers.
Al Jazeera's Nadim Baba has more on Gaza's first ever racing car.

[Formula Student] The future of F1?
The biggest ever Formula Student competition will be staged at Silverstone this summer, attracting engineering talent from all over the globe. The aim is for students to design and build their own single-seater that must meet a raft of exacting technical, design, speed, endurance and environmental criteria.
Entrants score points in each discipline across all categories, so the race is not all about speed; the eventual winner will need to have excelled across all areas. Formula Student is seen as one of the best "laboratories" for future F1 technologies. In fact 16 Class 1A cars will race in July, 13 of which will be electric, with organisers asking whether it raises the spectre of F1 "going electric".
"The electric cars in our Class 1A are now as fast, if not faster, than the petrol cars as the technology catches up," said a Formula Student spokesman. "The petrol car class will be merged with Class 1A next year." The students working on the cars are, say the organisers, future F1 technical directors and chief engineers, a factor recognised by the series' patron Ross Brawn, and James Allison, technical director at Lotus Renault GP, who is ambassador to the event this year. The organisers say they will soon announce an F1 "legend" who will attend the event, following in the footsteps of Damon Hill and David Coulthard.

12 teams make it to Bosch kart finals
A total of 53 blueprints were submitted from 21 private and public universities nationwide.
Both the champion and runners-up from the qualifying race will compete against finalists from Thailand, China, South Korea and the Philippines.
The company has also increased the number of finalists to 12 teams from the initial eight.
Bosch made the announcement during a racers briefing for the students at its Regional Training Facility in Petaling Jaya where the company unveiled its finalists.
Each team was also presented with a grant of RM12,000 and six Bosch cordless impact drills and driver units to build their race karts.
The interactive session saw Bosch Power Tools experts providing the finalists with the full specifications for the kart which they are to build.
The finalists were also given the opportunity to consult on the technicalities of building a race kart powered entirely by Bosch Li-Ion technology.
Robert Bosch Sdn Bhd regional sales director for Asean South, Chu Chee Bee, said it received many outstanding entries which made the selection of the 12 finalists a daunting task.
"We are confident that the finalists will build some truly competitive designs. The stage is set for an incredibly exciting race day.
"The competition is designed to provide budding engineers with a platform to explore their creativity and talent," added Chu.
The finalists are Mechanical Engineering Research Team, Raging Bull and The Fast 5 teams from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman; Quad Drive and T-Drive teams from UCSI University; Shooting Star from Universiti Teknologi Petronas; UTHM-FKMP-1 from Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia; Chuck Norris Racing from The University of Nottingham Malaysia; Bunja Racing Team from The Otomotif College; Cyclones from INTI College; N-Gage from Universiti Putra Malaysia, and Silence Killer from University College of Technology & Innovation.
The champion will receive RM3,000 and power tools worth RM2,000, and represent Malaysia at the grand finals in Beijing.
